Designers face a challenge: ‘ReStyle’ a ‘ReStore’ room

MOORESVILLE – A trio of designers took home awards Tuesday night in Our Towns Habitat for Humanity’ssecond annual ReStore Restyle design challenge at the Mooresville ReStore. The fundraiser required designers to decorate a 10×10 themed room using items from the Mooresville and Cornelius Habitat ReStores.

Tina Goins, of Stix and Stones Interiors, won the Judges’ Award for best room, with her white-and-grey office that included a wooden table painted white, a pair of lamps, a straight-backed chair and other items snagged from the ReStores.

The Judges Award for Most Creative use of the Mystery Object went to Beth Ybarra and Alison Arthur, of Creative Dimensions. And Kerrie Boys’Reading and Writing Room won the People’s Choice award for best room, as selected by guests at Tuesday night’s reception at the store.

Judges were Jennifer Marion Mills (Randy Marion Auto Group), Joan Higginbotham (Lowe’s Home Improvement), and Star Miller (Interior Design Society’s National Designer of the Year).

Mary Gibbs, the Mooresville ReStore manager, said more than 150 guests were at the event Tuesday night. “Our guests were so supportive and excited to see the room designs this year,” she said. “And they weren’t disappointed. The designers ranged in professional experience from hobbyist to seasoned professional and they created rooms that were fashionable and creatable in any home.”

People’s Choice votes cost $1 each, and more than 630 were cast Tuesday. You can still vote on the designs (and make a donation) this week on the OurTownsHabitat.org website this week, or at the two ReStores.

Other designers for the evening included: Patti Borrelli, photo stylist and interior designer; Becky Charles, Beckwith; Devon Freud, Upcycle by Jelbel; Sharon Kraus, Complements Home Interiors and Staging; Cindy Lazes, ReStore volunteer.

Our Towns Habitat for Humanity’s Youth United also hosted the first ever “Chair-ity” auction. The youth and volunteers refurbished 19 from the ReStore, then sold them in a silent auction. That helped raise money for a planned Youth United home build next year.

The designer rooms will be on display through Saturday May 5 at the Mooresville ReStore. Items from the rooms will be for sale beginning Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m., at the Mooresville ReStore, 121 Norman Station Blvd., off I-77 Exit 36, Mooresville. Call 704-896-8957 x206. The store is open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9 am – 6 p.m.

Vendor Fridays!

On the third Friday of each month we have VENDOR FRIDAY. This way we can educate ourselves on new product and find the latest and greatest for our clients.

Today we went to a presentation by Scott Kravet from one of our very favorite fabric companies, Kravet. They have GP&J Baker, Lee Jofa, Brunschwig and Fils, Groundworks and Kravet.

What fun! Scott had a video showing how the traditional IKAT fabric is made. You would not believe how they make this beautiful tie dyed fabric by hand, with vegetable dies in small forgotten villages. Blew me away!

Scott also took us through the new fabric designs coming from Candice Olson, Kelly Wearstler and Brunschwig and Fils. Now, I am the first to admit that I have railed in the past about Candice and her blue and brown palettes. She has a ‘look’. But I was pleased to see her at least peak around the corner and try some bright whites! Yes, there is glimmer and yes there is her bling, but it all hit a nice price point and should sell well.

Kelly Wearstler’s look is always very ‘California Bohemian Surprise’. Cannot say i loved it all, but I do appreciate how it all comes together for a look. There was one swatch that caught my eye. I can’t wait to show it to you in a future post!

Later in the day we met with our Pindler and Pindler rep and 3M Window film rep.

We learned alot today and I can’t wait for next month!

Why I love New York – the Museums!!!

Moma, the Met, the Guggenheim, the Museum of the City of New York, the Cooper Hewitt, the Neue – all of these hold a special place in my heart. When I was in design school I spent hours upon hours in these fabulous places. I was one of those people sitting on the floor trying to copy a master or trying to watercolor the palettes used by a master, studying the composition of a beautiful work of art or sketching the people looking at the art themselves. These were some of my happiest hours. I cannot wait to get back up there next month. I have no hope of ever becoming a master, but here are a few of my favorite sketches I did while at Parsons.

But then the man cooks and you forget about the dreamy and die from delight! I cannot wait to get back to this perfect place!

Why I love New York – BROADWAY!

My father took me to my first Broadway in 1973 where we saw "PIPPIN" starring, Ben Vereen, John Rubinstein, Jill Clayburgh and Irene Ryan (Granny). WOW! It was life altering. I wanted nothing more than to be on the stage, listen to the music and sing at the top of my lungs. Too bad I did not have the talent. (As Elphaba would say, "I’m limited". But talent comes to each of us in different ways.

I would go to the shows when they came through Atlanta, but it is still BROADWAY that wins my heart! When I was in school at Parsons I had the great fortune of going to over 35 different performances; Plays, Musicals, Opera, Ballet, Experimental theater (that’s another story).

I am thinking of this today as I am planning a trip next month to NYC to go to Kravet‘s #Blogfest2012. At last year’s event we snuck in 2 shows, "The Bengal Tiger at the Bagdad Zoo" and "SPIDERMAN – Turn off the Dark". The first one I did not care for at all – a first. SPIDERMAN, however, was a ton of fun!

I plan to catch a few shows while I am there this time as well. Right now I am trying to score tickets for the "Book of Mormon", and I just purchased tickets to "The Best Man" with Angela Lansbury. I would rather it have been Mame, but who could resist the great lady on Broadway?

If I could just move the whole place to driving distance to Charlotte/Lake Norman!

Last Year during Kravet’s #Blogfest2011 we had a great time at one of my favorite on-line spots 1st Dibs! Full of the unusual I can’t wait to go back! It is great for those of us who do not live in NY to have this available on line!

They even had Thom Filicia there to greet us!
