National award-winning Interior Designer, Starr Miller, is the Principal Designer of the only interior design firm in the Charlotte area that focuses on a client-collaborative, process-oriented approach to design. As a graduate in Interior Design from the prestigious Parsons School of Design in NYC, Starr has won the National Interior Design Society’s DOTY (Designer of the Year) award nine times, as well as many other national and regional awards for her firm’s design work. Additionally, she is the first Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) Designer in the area.

Starr writes a long-standing, bi-monthly expert column about interior design for Lake Norman Woman Magazine. She was the force behind the 2020 IDS Showhouses project.  Prior to moving to North Carolina, she was a designer for HGTV’s Save My Bath.

Starr is an incredible designer, leader and researcher.  She insists that her firm specialize in truly personalized projects.  She feels the key is to find the essence of the client and then delight them with their reflection.  There is nothing cookie-cutter about a SMID design.

The SMID team enjoys a sizable roster of enthusiastic clients in the Lake Norman/Charlotte area of North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, California, Minnesota, South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and London.

Prior to her Interior Design career, Starr was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Business Marketing (Roll Tide). After graduation, she spent two successful decades in the senior levels of the country’s largest and most respected retailers and Fortune 500 companies with global responsibility for purchasing negotiations and decisions. During this time, Starr also had the great opportunity to develop as a project manager while designing product, furniture, packaging, store space plans and advertising programs. These junctures prepared Starr for the great honor of professionally managing the design of her client’s own large investments – their homes.

When Starr decided to change her career path she vowed to become exactly the kind of interior designer she would hire herself: a great listener, with the design education and empathy to translate a client’s thoughts and desires into a home that says, “yes, this is me.”

Today, in addition to overseeing one of the most successful interior design teams in North Carolina, Starr Miller is a sought-after speaker on color, interior design and aging-in-place, and acts as a mentor/coach to many interior designers.

In her free time, Starr is an avid traveler, lucid dreamer, Broadway lover, reader, night-owl and artist. She is involved in several charitable organizations and serves on various boards. Her husband of 30 years, Tom, says she is an indoor dog which seems appropriate for an interior designer.
